Cinematography – It is the art and science of motion-picture photography. It creates a film stock by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either by an image sensor (electronically) or by a light-sensitive material (chemically). The cinematography is also known as Direction of Photography.

Videography – It is the process of capturing moving pictures on an electronic media either in a videotape, direct to disk recording or solid state storage. Their work will come during video production and post-production. Any video recorded for a non-commercial purpose in motion picture then it is known as videography.

Solo and Team:

  • Cinematographers work as a team. In any film/movie, a cinematographer will have the highest population of artists. They will guide their team members. As they are the in-charge of camera and lighting department, they will instruct their members to adjust camera angles, exposure, shot sizes, camera moves and so on.
  • Videographers mostly work solo or associated with a small crew. In any business meeting or conference, they will either video shoot the event solo or in coordination with one or two co-workers. They will adjust the camera moves and angles, exposure, shutter speed, etc by their own. They will not give or receive any instructions.

Nature of Work:

  • Cinematographers have an unlimited scope in a limited field. They work mostly in films and other storytelling projects like short-films, and drama serials. But they have an incredible option to customize their project timings, for instance, they can work on first half of a film now, and continue the second half after few months. Since these are not a few days job; they can work simultaneously on different projects.
  • Videographers have a limited scope in an unlimited field. They work exclusively for business meetings, conferences, TV shows, marriage and wedding receptions, birthday parties, school and college functions, corporate events, etc. Even though they got a plenty of openings here and there, they will work hard for two to ten days a stretch and they will relax for a while. They can’t work simultaneously like cinematographers do. They start a project and work on the same till it gets finished.

Complete motion-picture and Important moments:

  • Cinematographers will take a complete motion picture. They will never miss noticing a single scene. Right from the pre-production, they will listen to the script very carefully. They will ask some unbelievable questions to the director like “How the audience should feel for a scene?” They will give suggestions to the director, and when he/she approves it, the cinematographer will start working with the team.
  • Videographers will capture only the important moments. For instance, a business meeting is organized for like three hours; the videographer will shoot only for two to two and a half hours. Rest of the time will be unnecessary or irrelevant to the meeting. They will capture only the inauguration, guest speech, giving mementos/prizes, group discussions, and finally the conclusion. They will give significance only to the important moments rather than the entire show.

Level of creativity and style:

  • Cinematographers are fond of creativity, that’s why they choose this as their career. They work in films; try to bring their best artistic work. They will understand the movie script, visualize each and every scene and then start their work. They get inspired by everything they see. They have a unique perception, unlike others. Finally, they will take you to a different world.
  • Videographers have less access to creativity. As they capture events and occasions, they try to add a little bit of creativity during the editing process. They will focus only on the important and best moments. They try to bring sequences fun and interesting. They try new techniques and methods that could ensure a good memory.

Business and Entertainment:

  • Cinematographers are made for entertainment. Their only objective is to entertain people. They try hard to bring new ideas into the film and make it feel amusing to the audience. Let it be a small budget or a big budget, a drama serial or a movie, they will make it look attractive and exciting. They will work closely with the director and production designer and ensure that their expectations are met.
  • Videographers are purely for business purpose. They work closely with the top MNC and corporate companies to introduce their products or ideas to the market. They will study the product’s advantages and functions and deliver their work accordingly.
