Do’s and don’ts for a Professional photographer
While, it’s okay for an amateur photographer to make errors and learn, there are certain do’s and don’ts that one has to have in mind while choosing photography as a profession.
Do’s of professional photographer:
- Shoot on manual mode– while, shooting on automatic mode is easy, manual mode gives you a lot more options to work with. This gives the photographer the space to explore and be creative.
- Floor plans – always try and make floor plans for your shoots. Floor plan is a basic sketch of the subject, light and camera positioning during a shoot. Making floor plans prior to the shoot saves time during the shoot.
- Shoot in RAW – shooting in RAW format gives you a wide range of coloring options to work with.
- Choose the right lens : there are certain lenses that suit certain types of photography. Gain some knowledge about that and choose lenses accordingly for each shoot. For example, prime lenses work well for portrait shoots and wide lenses aren’t suitable for portrait shoot. So, opt for prime lens for portrait shoot. Similarly, macro lens are suitable for wildlife photography so, use a macro lens for wildlife shoots.
- Learn all the features : when you have a DSLR, learn about all the features it has. Explore every feature by using it and see how it impacts your photograph so that, when you go for a professional shoot, you would know which feature could come in handy. What camera you own is not as important as learning all the features your camera has.
- Follow framing rules : always try and follow the photography framing rules such as rule of thirds, the golden triangle rule. These are rules that have been tried and tested. Photographs look clear and more attractive when these rules are followed.
Don’ts of Professional photographer:
- Post processing: use minimal Photoshop and other post processing software on your photographs. Post processing is only to enhance the look of your photo not to manipulate the entire photo. This may lead to your photos looking unprofessional.
- Monochrome: use monochrome effect sparingly. Using monochrome on all photos is of no effect. There are certain photos that require that effect to make it look powerful and create an impact. Only those photos have to be in monochrome.
- Technicalities and aesthetics: do not focus too much on the technicalities and miss out on the aesthetical aspect of the photograph. Always remember that the end result should be that the photograph should come out beautifully.
- Style of photography: although, it is okay to have an inspiration in photography, do not copy somebody else’s style of photography. Follow different people and learn their styles and develop a style of your own.
- Deleting photographs: do not delete the existing photographs without having a minimum of at least two backups. You never know when your system may crash or your pen drive may go missing. So, make sure you have another source of backup in that case.
- Manipulating the truth: never manipulate the truth through your photographs. Especially if you are into photo journalism, make sure that your photographs speak the entire truth instead of covering up or saying the partial truth.
